New details released in deadly stabbing, shooting on I-5 in Federal Way

Detectives have identified a suspect in the deadly stabbing and shooting on I-5 in Federal Way that involved four people in a BMW on Wednesday.

Washington State Patrol troopers were dispatched to the incident around 2:40 p.m. on northbound I-5 near South 375th Street. 911 callers reported there were several injuries to individuals in and around the BMW partially in the right ditch. There were also reports of a shooting, according to a WSP news release.

Troopers found a man and woman with stab wounds who had distanced themselves from the BMW. Another man was on the ground next to the BMW with multiple gunshot wounds. The driver was in the car with a large stab wound to his neck. He died at the scene, the release said.

Patriot Ryan Lemay, 19, was identified as the deceased driver on Friday, according to a King County Medical Examiner’s Office news release.

Troopers confirmed that no other vehicle was involved.

At one point traffic was backed up to the Puyallup River bridge, The News Tribune reported. The crime scene was cleared after 11 p.m. that day, the release said.

Detectives later determined the man who sustained the gunshot wounds was the suspect. They believe he was in the back seat when he stabbed the driver and the other two passengers.

He is still in the hospital and, once he is medically cleared, will be booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault, the release said. Detectives are in the process of determining who fired the handgun. The investigation is still active.

The names of those involved will not be released until the King County Prosecutor’s Office files charges.
